Het is toegestaan je paard te scheren mits je rekening houdt met het volgende: In het FIRO staat: art. 1.3: "The Icelandic horse is a unique breed with special qualities related to its primitive character. It shall be shown respect unreservedly. The following rules apply at all times: the natural appearance (e.g. natural growth and color of hair) of the horse shall not be changed. Exceptions - the mane and tail may be trimmed if too long, and the horse may be clipped for health and welfare reasons. Hair on the muzzle, fetlocks, and inside the ears shall not be clipped." Dit betekent dat het is toegestaan om je paard te scheren, mits je kan uitleggen waarom dat voor het welzijn van jouw paard beter is (of was). Het is dus niet toegestaan om haren op de snuit of de vetlok of de binnenkant van de oren te knippen / scheren. Scheer ook met respect voor je paard: het is niet de bedoeling je paard te voorzien van ferrari-racestrepen of Nike-sportstrepen, dat zijn kunstuitingen en dat is niet de bedoeling in de wedstrijdbaan (nog afgezien van eventuele problemen met sponsoruitingen.
